Pikey Peak Trek Highlights
Pikey Peak Trek overview
Pikey Peak Trek takes you to a rarely explored trekking trail in Lower Solu Khumbu. The trail, which lies close to Kathmandu, can be accessed by driving or flying within a day from the capital city. It is a short trek which can be completed within ten days. Recommended by none other than Sir Edmund Hillary as one of the best Mount Everest viewpoints,
Pikey Peak Trek with Everest View offers impressive views of seven of the eight 8000-meter peaks that lie in Nepal. From the awe-inspiring mountains of eastern Nepal like Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu, to the giants of mid-west and western Nepal -Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Gaurishankar– one can savor the majestic beauty of the Nepal Himalaya from Pikey. Apart from the incredible views, the trek offers an immersive cultural experience.
You will be walking through the Sherpa villages of Lower Solu Khumbu, where the twin summits of the short and easy Pikey Peak trek are regarded as guardian peaks. Dotting the trail are Buddhist Gompas established by Tibetan Buddhist masters who found refuge in this remote corner of Nepal after fleeing from the Chinese invasion of Tibet. At Junbesi and the Thupten Choling Gompa(which was established by a Tibetan Buddhist Lama), there's a large community of Tibetan monks and nuns.
An endless stretch of snow-covered mountains and green hills welcome you as you enter the airspace of Nepal. If you arrive during the day you can enjoy this marvelous view from the plane. Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our representative will welcome you and take you to your hotel. After checking in you can enjoy a welcome drink and take a rest.
If you want to book a sightseeing tour of the city's heritage sites, please do let us know. We will arrange it for you. Please do note the cost of a sightseeing tour is not included in the trip cost and you may have to pay separately if you book the sightseeing tour. Overnight at a hotel.

There's a Yak Cheese Factory and some local distilleries which you can visit. Overnight at a lodge.
You wake up before sunrise and head to Pikey Peak. Using head torches to light up the way you will hike up a gentle slope. After hiking for about an hour you reach the top of Pikey Peak. The route to the top is non-technical and you can easily walk to the summit. There are few steep ascents and the hike is not that exhausting.
Enjoy the view of the mountains touched by the first rays of the sun. The valley below is covered by a bed of clouds. It feels magical to stand at the summit of Pikey Peak and enjoy these views. The summit, decorated with prayer flags has a chorten at the top, which Sherpas from Papting, Likhu Pikey, and other neighboring villages regard as their protective deity. Pikey Peak is 'sungma' or the guardian deity to the Sherpas.
From Kanchenjunga in the east to Dhaulagiri in the west, the Himalayan range extends like an unbroken chain on the horizon. Except for Cho Oyu which is covered by the summit of Numbur Himal, you can view all the 8000-meter peaks that lie in Nepal – Mount
Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Manaslu, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna. These mountains are also among ten of the fourteen highest peaks in the world.
The wind is strong and fierce at the top, and it can be pretty cold. Therefore dress appropriately. If you are trekking during winter you will find the peak covered with snow.
You need to wear crampons (as there will be patches of ice on the way) and use trekking poles to climb up the peak. After enjoying the views from the top, you head down to the base camp. You have your breakfast before continuing toward Jasmane Bhanjyang. It is a short trek on the side of a ridge. You reach Jasmine Bhanjyang after an hour and a half or two hours hike from Pikey Peak. A long descent down a forested trail finally brings you to the large Sherpa settlement of Junbesi. Junbesi also has a sizable Tibetan community. There are two Buddhist monasteries inside the village. The famous Thupten Choling Gompa (monastery) sits above the settlement. Established by Trulsik Rinpoche, a highly respected Tibetan Lama, who resided in Junbesi after fleeing from Tibet, the monastery is a center of learning for Anis or Buddhist nuns.
If you are not too tired you can hike to this monastery and interact with the nuns. Or you can explore the lively village and the Junbesi Monastery. The villagers are mostly engaged in farming and you can observe them working in their fields.
Overnight at a lodge.
Today’s trek leads you to an upward ascent through a forest of pine and fir trees. It's a beautiful hike filled with breathtaking views of Numbur Himal and Mount Everest. Overnight at a lodge.
This is the final day of your trek. You leave Ringbu and head down to Phaplu. The hike takes you down a beautiful trail dotted with fields and farmhouses. The hills are covered with pine and juniper trees. You cross the wooden bridge over the Temuche Khola(river) and walk on a steady uphill trail. Along the way, you find wooden planks stacked up and ready to be transported to other villages higher up. Walking downhill you cross terraced fields and homes of the locals before arriving at a dusty jeep track that leads to Phaplu. Though the best seasons are spring and autumn, you can visit Pikey Peak during winter too.
In spring the rhododendron forests along the trail burst into pink, white, and red blooms.
The colorful blooms in the backdrop of the snow-covered mountains are a sight to behold.
You can enjoy good weather and clear skies during autumn and spring.
During winter the peak gets covered with snow making your trek more adventurous.
Summer is not a good season to trek to Pikey Peak, as it rains heavily and the road gets blocked.
You can also time your travel during the Sherpa festival of Dumji which is observed in May or June. It’s a Buddhist festival celebrated in the monastery. During the festival, masked dances and religious rituals are performed by the monks. Dumji marks the birth anniversary of Guru Rimpoche or Padmasambhava, the Second Buddha, who introduced Buddhism in the Himalayas.
Pikey Peak Trek is an easy trek that is recommended for beginners and families traveling with kids. The hike is pretty easy with few steep ascents. You follow a gentle up-and-down trail, with some flat and level portions. The return trek is more difficult than the ascent to
Pikey Peak, which requires hiking on an incline, To complete this trek you need to be fit and healthy. You should be able to cover long distances on foot as you will be walking for 5 to 6 hours on average. If you want to skip the return trek you can drive back to Kathmandu directly from Jhapre or Loding which lies close to Pikey Base Camp.
You will be sleeping overnight at the lodges run by local Sherpa families. They provide basic amenities – a room with comfortable beds, a common dining area, and a shared toilet and bathroom. Some new lodges may offer en suite bathrooms.
The food available on the trail is made with locally sourced products and is nutritious and hearty. you won’t get much variety like on the EBC trek or ABC trails, but the food is freshly cooked and healthy.
Pikey Peak is also a great destination for cyclists and motorbike riders. There is a rough jeep track running to Jhapre, a Sherpa settlement that lies close to Pikey Peak. After riding to Jhapre, one can take the short hike to Pikey Peak and ride back.
A marvelous short and scenic adventure to a high Pikey Peak trek, actually it is not a peak. I would recommend to others as Pikey scenic view-point hill, as I have done many treks around Nepal Himalayas in the past decades.
The best on this trek is walking on a serene quiet trail away from the mass flow of trekkers. A lovely country trekking through quant sleepy farm villages, as well as walking into enchanting woods of rhododendrons and pine trees. Truly an amazing experience from the top of Pikey Hill, what a wonderful sight facing a mind-blowing panorama of a snowy mountain range with views of Mt. Everest. Certainly much recommendable and quite different from other mainstream trekking. Thanks to Team Himalaya for presenting this special trek to Pikey Peak trek.
