The trek begins with a drive or flight to Lake City, Pokhara. On the third day of your arrival, we will finally commence the trek from Pokhara to Nayapul. From here on, we will trek through several picturesque Gurung villages such as Ghandruk, Chomrung, and Bamboo. On the sixth day, we will finally reach the Annapurna Base Camp at a staggering elevation of 4,095m via Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,720m). From the Annapurna Base Camp, we will be able to witness colossal peaks like Mt. Annapurna 1, Mt. Annapurna 3, Annapurna South, Mt. Himchuli, Mt. Gandharvachuli, and Mt. Gangapurna at very close range. While trekking down, we will descend via a different route through the villages of Jhinu Danda, Potana, and Kande, which qualifies the trek as a mini-circuit and enhances the experience. In addition to its naturally beautiful landscapes, the region is also notable for its rich civilisation and culture. The original inhabitants of the Annapurna region, the Gurungs, have a unique culture and elaborate traditions, which they have successfully preserved and prospered over the years. During our stay at the tea houses operated by these people, we will experience their hospitality and be part of the traditional village lifestyle.
The Short ABC Trek is an incredible, epic, and rewarding trek that offers breathtaking mountain views, enchanting forested trails, and picturesque villages with rich histories. It is of a moderate difficulty level and achievable for anyone in good health. Although it is an easy-to-moderate trek, it is still preferable to have some pre-physical training. However, our trekking itinerary has been specially designed to make the trip more pleasant, less strenuous, and more convenient.

Know Before you Go
Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek Best Time to Go:
The ideal seasons for the Short Annapurna Base Camp and Annapurna Sanctuary treks are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). During spring, the trail is alive with blooming rhododendrons, warm days, and lush greenery, creating colourful landscapes that are perfect for photography and nature lovers. Autumn, on the other hand, offers stable weather, crystal-clear skies, and stunning Himalayan panoramas, making it the preferred season for trekkers seeking panoramic mountain views. Winter trekking is possible for those who are well-prepared, though higher sections may be snow-covered and temperatures can drop significantly, making it suitable for experienced trekkers. The monsoon months (June-August) are less favourable due to heavy rainfall, slippery paths, leeches, and limited visibility. Tip: Before leaving Pokhara, check the local weather forecast, since mountain conditions can change quickly and may affect both trekking safety and travel schedules.
Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek Difficulty
This trek is considered moderately challenging and is suitable for most healthy individuals with a basic fitness level. Expect daily walks of 5 to 7 hours, often on steep stone steps and through forested terrain. The highest point, Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m), may cause mild altitude effects, but with a steady pace, it’s manageable. Although prior trekking experience isn’t required, being physically active and familiar with walking on uneven terrain will make your journey more comfortable. Trekking in higher altitudes demands stamina, mental strength, and adaptability, so even moderate preparation can make the trek much more rewarding. Tip: Build stamina by practising stair climbing or short hikes with a loaded backpack a few weeks before departure.
Accommodation and Food
The route uses Nepal’s tea-house trekking system, where travellers stay in small, family-run mountain lodges. Rooms are simple, usually with twin beds and shared facilities, but the cosy environment and warm hospitality make the experience memorable. Meals are served at the tea houses and include Nepali dal bhat, soups, noodles, rice, pancakes, pasta, and vegetable dishes. As the altitude increases, food options become more limited, and prices rise slightly due to transportation challenges. Staying nourished and hydrated is essential, so planning meals and snacks carefully is important. Tip: Carry small, high-energy snacks such as nuts, chocolate, or protein bars for long trekking days when options may be limited.
Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek Permits
Two permits are required for this trek: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These can be obtained in Kathmandu and Pokhara and are handled by trekking agencies. Permit checkpoints are spread along the trail, so it’s crucial to keep them accessible throughout the trek. These permits also help support conservation efforts in the region, ensuring that trekking activities remain sustainable. Tip: Save a digital copy of your permits on your phone in case the originals are misplaced during the trek.
Culture and History
The trek passes through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, including famous stops like Ghandruk and Chomrong. The Gurung people are celebrated for their rich cultural heritage and for their role as courageous Gorkha soldiers. Along the way, you’ll encounter monasteries, shrines, prayer flags, and tea houses that reflect the region’s vibrant yet straightforward lifestyle. These communities provide trekkers a glimpse into age-old customs, traditional music, and local crafts, creating a culturally immersive experience. Respectful interactions with locals can make your journey much more meaningful. Tip: Learn a few basic Nepali words, such as Namaste (hello) or Dhanyabad (thank you), to create meaningful connections with villagers.
Acclimatisation and Altitude
Although not as high as other Himalayan expeditions, the trek still reaches over 3,000 m, where altitude sickness can affect some trekkers. Typical symptoms include headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Staying hydrated, maintaining a steady pace, and avoiding alcohol are the best preventive measures. Trekkers should pay close attention to their bodies and not ignore any early warning signs. If symptoms worsen, descending to a lower altitude is the only safe option. Acclimatisation days or slower trekking paces can significantly reduce risks, making the ascent safer and more enjoyable. Tip: Pack oral rehydration salts (ORS) or electrolyte powders to stay hydrated and maintain mineral balance during the trek.
Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek Packing List
Sturdy trekking boots and lightweight sandals
Waterproof jacket, fleece, and down jacket
Thermal layers and quick-dry trekking pants
Gloves, a warm hat, and UV-protection sunglasses
Sleeping bag rated -5°C to -10°C (available for rent in Pokhara)
Trekking poles and a headlamp with spare batteries
Reusable water bottle with filter or purification tablets
Toiletries and a quick-dry towel
Sunscreen, lip balm, and a small first-aid kit
Power bank, camera, and extra memory cards
Local currency in small denominations
Tip: Keep your backpack light, 12 to 15 kg max. A manageable load makes trekking much easier and reduces fatigue at higher altitudes. Consider packing multi-purpose clothing to minimise weight.
Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended and should cover high-altitude trekking (up to 5,000 m), medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation, accidents, and trip cancellations. Always review your policy details carefully and carry both physical and digital copies of your insurance documents. This provides peace of mind in the event of unexpected situations on the trail. Tip: Note down your insurance provider’s 24-hour emergency hotline in case mobile networks are unavailable.
Transportation
The journey begins with either a 30-minute flight or a 6 to 7-hour drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From Pokhara, it’s about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive to Nayapul, the trek’s starting point. After completing the trek, you’ll return to Pokhara before heading back to Kathmandu by road or air. Scenic landscapes along the way, including rivers, terraced fields, and mountain views, make the journey enjoyable rather than just a commute. Tip: If travelling by road, choose a morning departure for smoother traffic and better road conditions.
Electricity and Communication
Electricity is available in most villages, though charging devices may come at an extra cost. Wi-Fi is offered in several tea houses, but speeds can be slow, especially at higher altitudes. Mobile networks (Ncell and Nepal Telecom) work well in lower regions but become weaker as you climb higher. Carrying a power bank is very useful. Staying connected lets you share trekking experiences, navigate safely, and keep in touch with family. Tip: Download offline maps and translation apps in Pokhara, since internet access may not always be reliable on the trail.
Drinking Water
Staying hydrated is essential. Bottled water is available along the trek, but prices rise with altitude. A sustainable option is to fill reusable bottles with boiled or filtered water provided at tea houses, or purify tap water with tablets. Hydration helps prevent altitude sickness and keeps energy levels high throughout the trek. Tip: Use insulated bottles to keep water warm and prevent freezing in higher, colder areas.
Guide and Porter
Hiring a guide ensures safety, helps with navigation and permits, and adds cultural insight. Porters can carry your load, allowing you to trek comfortably. Their support not only makes the journey smoother but also contributes to the local economy. Guides can also alert you to wildlife, rare plants, and hidden viewpoints, enriching the trekking experience. Tip: Agree on a clear weight limit, usually 10 to 15 kg, with your porter and use a waterproof cover to protect your gear from rain or snow.
Money and Payment
The Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the local currency. Cash is essential, as credit cards are rarely accepted on the trail. ATMs are available in Pokhara, but not in higher settlements. Carry enough money for food, lodging, and small purchases. Keeping track of spending and maintaining contingency funds ensures you are never stranded in a remote area. Tip: Always keep smaller notes, since tea houses and shops often lack change for larger bills.
Health and Safety
Carry a personal first-aid kit with medicines for headaches, stomach issues, and altitude-related problems. Essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, and sunglasses are also necessary. Health posts are available in some lower villages, but serious emergencies usually require evacuation to Pokhara. Staying hygienic, eating freshly prepared meals, and drinking safe water minimise health risks. Trekking with a partner or group adds extra safety in remote areas. Tip: Visit a doctor before your trip for personalised medical advice and carry extra doses of any prescribed medications.

We had a very successful EBC trek in October 2024 because of Team Himalaya! Our guide, Raj, was very knowledgeable in all things Everest. He set us up in the best lodges where we had great service all along. He provided us with a superb porter, who also went above and beyond in taking care of us. Raj was very patient with us and was always looking out for our best interests. We would highly recommend Team Himalaya for any trek!

Everest Base Camp Team Himalaya March 2024
We have just returned from a 14 day, 11 day hike with Raj and Durga from Team Himalaya to Everest Base Camp. From the minute we landed to our departure we were properly looked after and cared for by Team Himalaya. The trek to and from Everest Base Camp was wonderful, our guides and porters really looked after us and were incredibly knowledgeable. In Nepal things can go wrong especially with flights to and from Lukla but Team responded magnificently and found alternative solutions. If this is on your bucket list as ours and you are looking for a company to organise this with I would 100% recommend Raj.

Incredible Experience by evan
It was an incredible experience being surrounded by the towering Annapurna Himalayas. This memorable trek through Nepal offered the best scenic views and stunning landscapes. Despite being surprised at how quickly the trek ended, the daily walks were filled with dramatic views that left a lasting impression.
I highly recommend this adventure, as it is one of the best base camp treks in the Himalayas with minimal risk of altitude sickness. Although there were steep ups and downs that were tiring on some days, the breathtaking views made it all worth it. This was easily the most exciting trek I have ever experienced.
I want to thank Team Himalayas and Raj for providing exceptional service with their expert guide and staff.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Short Annapurna Base camp Trek
What is the best time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp?
The ideal seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), offering clear skies, stable weather, and vibrant landscapes. Spring features blooming rhododendrons and green forests, while autumn provides crisp air and stunning mountain views. Winter is possible but colder, and the monsoon is less suitable due to heavy rainfall and slippery trails.
How difficult is the trek?
The trek is moderate in difficulty, suitable for most healthy individuals. Daily walks average 5–7 hours with a mix of uphill, downhill, and flat trails. The highest point is Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m. Some prior fitness training is recommended for a more enjoyable experience.
How long is the Short Annapurna Base Camp trek?
The trek typically lasts 11 days, including arrival and departure from Kathmandu, with daily trekking distances ranging from 6 km to 16 km. What kind of accommodation is available? Accommodation is mostly in tea houses and small, locally run lodges offering basic amenities such as twin beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. Higher altitude lodges have simpler facilities. Meals are provided at the tea houses.
What kind of food is available?
Meals usually include Nepali dal bhat, noodles, soups, rice, bread, pancakes, and pasta. Food options decrease, and prices increase with altitude. Carrying lightweight snacks, such as nuts or energy bars, is recommended.
Are permits required for the trek?
Yes, two permits are needed: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These can be obtained in Kathmandu and Pokhara through a trekking agency.
What cultural experiences can be expected?
The trek passes through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, such as Ghandruk and Chomrong. Trekkers can experience local customs, visit shrines and monasteries, and observe traditional lifestyles and hospitality.
How should I prepare for altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness can occur above 3,000 m. The itinerary allows gradual acclimatisation. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and dizziness. Staying hydrated, pacing yourself, and avoiding alcohol helps. Severe symptoms require immediate descent.
What essential items should I pack?
Bring trekking boots, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, a sleeping bag, trekking poles, water purification, and personal toiletries. Keep your pack under 12–15 kg for comfort.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, insurance should cover high-altitude trekking, medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation, accidents, and trip cancellations. Carry copies of your documents and emergency contacts.
Is electricity and internet available on the trail?
Electricity is available in most tea houses, often for a small fee. Wi-Fi is limited and slow at higher altitudes. Carry a power bank, and download offline maps and translation apps in advance.
How can I access safe drinking water?
Boiled or filtered water is available at lodges, or you can treat tap water with purification tablets. Bottled water is expensive at higher altitudes. Insulated bottles help keep water warm and prevent freezing.
Should I hire a guide or porter?
Hiring a licensed guide is highly recommended for safety, navigation, and cultural insights. Porters can carry gear, making the trek easier and supporting the local economy.
What is the local currency and payment method?
The local currency is Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Cash is widely used along the trail, and ATMs are only in Pokhara. Credit cards are rarely accepted.
Is there mobile network coverage along the trail?
Mobile connectivity works in lower regions but weakens at higher altitudes. Wi-Fi is available in some tea houses, but it may be slow.
Can I trek independently without a guide?
Yes, the trail is well-marked. However, hiring a guide enhances safety and provides cultural and environmental insights.
Are there hot showers available on the trail?
Some lower-altitude tea houses provide hot showers, usually for an extra fee. Most higher-altitude lodges only offer cold showers.
How do I prevent blisters and foot problems?
Use well-fitted trekking boots, moisture-wicking socks, and break in new boots before the trek. Trekking poles reduce foot strain. Keep feet dry and clean.
Can I use solar chargers or power banks on the trail?
Yes, solar chargers and power banks are recommended, as electricity is limited and sometimes costly at tea houses. They are especially useful for long treks in remote areas.
